Shooting Action and Olympic Shooting Tickets

Shooting is used for hunting upland game birds such as grouse or pheasant, rabbits, culling, deer hunting or other wild game animals, or shooting pest animals. Sometimes "shooting" refers to the hunting activity itself.  Shooting obviously is used in warfare, self defense, crime, and law enforcement. Duels were sometimes held using guns. Shooting without a target has applications such as celebratory gunfire, 21 gun salute or firing starting pistols, incapable of releasing bullets.
Action Shooting is a generic term applicable to non-traditional shooting sports, generally characterized by rapid movement within each shooting stage, where most or all begins with holster draw in the case of handguns. Examples include 'practical pistol' as in the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC), the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) and the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA), as well as cowboy action shooting ,Action Air gun (AAG), and 'three-gun' events noted below. The latter two involve use of rifles, handguns, and shotguns within the same event.
Disciplines such as National Rifle Association's Action Pistol, also known as The Bianchi Cup, also belongs to the action shooting category, but extreme accuracy fired within tight, predetermined time limits is more paramount than raw speed.

Shooting Technique and safety considerations and Olympic Shooting Tickets

Shooting technique differs depending on factors like the type of firearm used from a handgun to a sniper rifle, the distance to and nature of the target, the required precision and the available time. Breathing and position play an important role when handling a handgun or a rifle. Some shooting sports, such as IPSC shooting, make a sport of combat style shooting. The prone position, the kneeling position and the standing position offer different amounts of support for the shooter. Holding the gun sideways, as is sometimes seen in movies and on television, is poor gun handling; it makes the weapon likely to jam as any ejected case may fail to leave the weapon completely.
The utmost consideration for many shooters is gun safety. Like many activities such as mountain climbing, skiing, or sky diving, there is an element of danger involved. And especially here, this danger demands a sober understanding and respect for firearms and the specific rules for the safe handling of them. This is compounded by the fact that the danger can easily extend beyond the participants a stray bullet can injure or kill people other than those actually firing or handling the arms involved. At public ranges, the safety of all participants depends on the knowledge of everyone at the range.

Advantages of Handguns VS Shoulder Firearms and Olympic Shooting Tickets

In comparison to long guns like rifles and shotguns, handguns are smaller, lighter, and easier to carry. Since firearms do not rely entirely on the user's strength, they put weaker individuals on an equal defensive footing; when Colt produced the first practical repeating handgun, it gave rise to the saying "God created men, but Colt made them equal."
Since using a handgun, at a minimum, requires one hand whereas long guns often require both, that leaves a handgun user with a free hand. One example of where this is an advantage is with tactical lights, where the light and handgun can be used independently or in coordination; mounted lights, as used on long guns and submachine guns, don't allow the light to be pointed independently of the firearm. In addition, handguns can be more easily used ambidextrously, and therefore the user can switch firing hands depending on the situation. Another important tactical consideration in the context of civilian self-defense is maneuverability. An attacker in close quarters with the defender could more easily wrestle a long gun's muzzle to a position where it is not covering him, or could more easily wrestle the gun away from the defender, whereas a handgun offers little to grab, and would be more likely to still be covering some portion of the attacker during the struggle.

Handgun and Olympic Shooting Tickets

A handgun is a firearm designed to be held and operated by one hand. This characteristic differentiates handguns as a general class of firearms from long guns such as rifles and shotguns which are mounted against the shoulder.
Major handgun subtypes are the revolver and pistol; other subtypes include derringers, single-shot pistols, semi-automatic pistols, pepperboxes, and machine pistols. The overlapping variations in meaning of the words "pistol" and "handgun" are discussed below. Although handgun use often includes bracing with a second hand, the essential distinguishing characteristic of a handgun is its facility for one handed operation.
The word "pistol" is often synonymous with the word "handgun". Some handgun experts make a technical distinction that views pistols as a subset of handguns. Sometimes in American usage, the term "pistol" refers to a handgun having one chamber integral with the barrel, making pistols distinct from the other main type of handgun, the revolver, which has a revolving cylinder containing multiple chambers. But UK/Commonwealth usage often does not make this distinction. For example, the official designation of the Webley Mk VI was "Pistol, Revolver, Webley No. 1 Mk VI", and the designation "Pistol No. 2 Mk I" was used to refer to both the Enfield Revolver and the later Browning Hi-Power semi-automatic.
Handheld firearms were first made in China where gunpowder was first developed. They were hand cannons although they were not necessarily fired from the hand, but rather at the end of a handle. By the 14th century, they existed in Europe as well. The first handheld firearms that might better be called "pistols" were made as early as the 15th century, but their creator is unknown. By the 18th century, the term came to be used often to refer to handheld firearms. Practical revolver designs appeared in the 19th century, but it was not until the mid-twentieth century that the (sometimes-observed) differentiation in usage of the words "pistol" and "revolver" evolved among some speakers and the use of "handgun" became prevalent. Previously there had been no such differentiation, and in fact Samuel Colt's original patent was for a "revolving-breech pistol." There is no literal equivalent for "handgun" in the Romance languages, which continue to use cognates of the word "pistol".

The Royal Artillery Barracks and Olympic Shooting Tickets

The Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich in South East London is the "home" of the Royal Artillery. It is famous for having the longest continuous building facade in the UK as well as for having the largest parade square of any UK barracks. The Barracks were built between 1776 and 1802 on a site overlooking Woolwich Common. Their use by the RA ended with the departure of 16 Regiment, Royal Artillery in July 2007.
Woolwich has extensive links with weaponry. Besides the Royal Artillery Barracks it was the location of the Royal Arsenal complex, which was the British Government's principal armaments manufacturing facility for over 200 years, and the Royal Military Academy which trained artillery officers and engineers from 1741 to 1939. There was also a military hospital based at Woolwich which closed in the mid 1990s. Woolwich Common is still a designated military training area although troops are not often seen nowadays. Woolwich Dockyard was one of the principal Royal Dockyards during the Tudor and Stuart periods, although it closed in the late 19th century for Royal Navy use as the Thames was by then too difficult to navigate for the naval vessels of the time.
It has often been a matter of debate as to whether the Ministry of Defense would dispose of the barracks as surplus to requirements. This is now not the case as the barracks has been designated one of the MoD's "core sites". At one time it was rumored that the only reason that the barracks was not being closed and sold was that the members of the Royal Artillery Mess who owned their officers' mess in the building would not consent to sell, and so the Mod were forced to recognize that they could not dispose of the building in its entirety. Now it is planned that, now the last RA unit has moved out, the public duties line infantry battalion and incremental companies of the Foot Guards will be moved from Chelsea Barracks and Cavalry Barracks, which will be closed. Also, the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery are scheduled to move from the St John's Wood barracks to new quarters and stables on the Woolwich site during 2011, bringing a complement of 75 or thereabouts horses, historic gun carriages and artillery pieces used for their displays.
The Olympic Shooting events at the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in London, Great Britain will be held at a temporary venue at the Barracks. The original venue for the Olympic Shooting was the National Olympic Shooting Centre at Bisley in Surrey, but the plan was changed after the International Olympic Committee expressed reservations about the number of sports which London proposed to stage outside the city. Shotgun Rounds and Olympic Shooting Tickets

Shot shells are loaded with different sizes of shot depending on the target. For skeet shooting, a small shot such as # 8 or #9 would be used, because range is short and a high density pattern is desirable. Trap shooting requires longer shots, and so a larger shot, up to #7½ would be desired. For hunting game, the range and the penetration needed to assure a clean kill must both be considered. Shot loses its velocity very quickly due to its low sectional density and ballistic coefficients see external ballistics. Small shot, like that used for skeet and trap, will have lost all appreciable energy by 100 yards or meters, which is why trap and skeet ranges can be located in relatively close proximity to inhabited areas with negligible risk of injury to those outside the range.
Birdshot sizes are numbered similar to the shotgun gauges; the smaller the number, the larger the shot. Generally birdshot is just called "shot", such as "number 9 shot" or "BB shot". A useful method for remembering the diameter of numbered birdshot is simply to subtract the shot size from 17. The resulting answer is the diameter of the shot in hundredths of an inch. For example, number 2 shot gives 17-2 = 15, meaning that the diameter of number 2 shot is 15/100 or 0.15". B shot is .170 inches, and sizes go up in .01 increments for BB and BBB or Pellets.
Larger sizes of shot, large enough that they must be carefully packed into the shell rather than simply dumped or poured in, are called "buckshot" or just "buck". Buckshot is used for hunting larger game, such as deer hence derivation of the name, and also in riot shotguns and combat shotguns for defensive, police, and military use. Buckshot size is designated by number, with smaller numbers being larger shot; sizes larger than "0” are designated by multiple zeros. "00" is the most commonly used size.
A standard 00 buck shell holds 7-9 pellets. Two types of 00 buckshot are commonly available from suppliers: regular 00 buckshot shells and reduced recoil shells favored in law enforcement or home defense use. Low recoil 00 buckshot allows the shooter to make fast follow-up shots, which may be needed in a combat situation, but are not typically required in hunting where the main goal is to cleanly take out the game with a single shot. It's also useful as a stepping stone for shooters who are not yet used to the recoil of full-power shells.

Du Li and Shooting Tickets

China's Du Li and her fellow shooters will start off the Beijing Games in exciting fashion. The first event to award a medal both, at the Games and the test event, the women's 10m air rifle competition featured some welcome drama. The defending Olympic champion in the event, Du and 2004 bronze medalist Katerina Emmons of the Czech Republic were tied at 399 after the qualifying round. Emmons then unleaded a bevy of 10-plus shots in the finals the final round is measured by tenths of a point, as Du succumbed with a 9.8 and 9.7 in the midst of her ten shots. Emmons would go on to tie Du's finals world record of 504.9. "It is normal to get nine points," Du Li told the Xinhua News Agency. "Maybe there are psychological reasons and I will make a good sum-up after the competitions.
But that wouldn't be the last heard of Du at the event. In the women's 3-positions rifle, while facing world-renown shooter Sonja Pfeilschifter of Germany and the event's defending Olympic champ, Lyoubov Galkina of Russia, Du rose to the challenge and won gold despite not even being in the top 100 in the world in the event. "I have never given up the small bore rifle event," Du Li told the Xinhua News Agency. "I've already got a gold medal for the air rifle, so I am more eager for one of the small bore. I want to prove that I can perform excellently in this event as well."
Because the air rifle event is the first Olympic medal being handed out, there is extra expectation on Du to succeed and start the host nation off on the right foot in winning medals. "Maybe this will be the only chance for me to compete in the Olympic Games hosted by my own country, and I enjoy pressure," she said to the Xinhua News Agency.
Like her opponent Katerina Emmons, who married American gold-medal winner Matthew Emmons, Du Li also looks to her sport for her love interest. She is dating Zhang Fu who used to shoot for the Chinese national shooting squad.

10 meter Air Rifle and Shooting Tickets

10 meter air rifle is an International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) shooting event, shot over a distance of 10 meters from a standing with a 4.5 mm caliber air rifle with a maximum weight of 5.5 kg. The use of specialized clothing is allowed to improve the stability of the shooting position and prevent chronic back injury which can be caused by the asymmetric offset load on the spine when the rifle is held in position. It is one of the ISSF governed shooting events included in the Olympic Games.
The course of fire is an unlimited number of slighter shots followed by 60 competition shots for men or 40 competition shots for women, all fired within 105 minutes for men or 75 minutes for women. During this initial or qualification phase a maximum of 10 points are awarded for each shot. The top eight shooters follow this with a final 10 shots each scored to a maximum of 10.9 with the cumulative score determining the winner. The maximum of 10.9 is derived from an additional set of 10 rings within the center 10 point circle, increasing in 0.1 point value as the rings approach the center of the target. The competition is won by the shooter who reaches the highest aggregate score qualification + final score.
For the 10 meter air rifle and air pistol disciplines match diabolic pellets are used. These pellets have wad cutter heads, meaning the front is flat, that leave clean round holes in paper targets for easy scoring. Match pellets are offered in tins and more elaborate packaging’s that avoid deformation and other damage that could impair their uniformity.
Match air rifle shooters are encouraged to perform shooting group tests with their gun clamped in a machine rest to establish which particular match pellet type performs best for their particular air gun. To facilitate maximum performance out of various air guns the leading match pellet manufacturers produce pellets with graduated "head sizes", which means the pellets are offered with front diameters from 4.48 mm up to 4.52 mm.

Shotgun and Shooting Tickets

A shotgun is a firearm that is usually designed to be fired from the shoulder, which uses the energy of a fixed shell to fire a number of small spherical pellets called shot, or a solid projectile called a slug. Shotguns come in a wide variety of sizes, ranging from 5.5 mm bore up to 5 cm bore, and in a range of firearm operating mechanisms, including breech loading, single barreled, double or combination gun, pump-action, bolt and lever-action, semi automatic, and even fully automatic variants.
A shotgun is generally a smoothbore firearm, which means that the inside of the barrel is not rifled. Preceding smoothbore firearms, such as the musket, were widely used by armies in the 18th century. The direct ancestor to the shotgun, the blunderbuss, was also used in a similar variety of roles from self defense to riot control. It was often used by cavalry troops due to its generally shorter length and ease of use, as well as by coachmen for its substantial power. However, in the 19th century, these weapons were largely replaced on the battlefield with breech loading rifled firearms, which were more accurate over longer ranges. The military value of shotguns was rediscovered in the First World War, when American forces used 12 gauge pump action shotguns in close-quarters trench fighting to great effect. Since then, it has been used in a variety of roles in civilian, law enforcement, and military applications.
Some of the most common uses of shotguns are the sports of skeet shooting, trap shooting, and sporting clays. These involve shooting clay discs, also known as clay pigeons, thrown in various ways. Both skeet and trap competitions are featured at the Olympic Games. Skeet shooting usually deals with 25 shots, while sporting clays can be a course up to 100 shots

Introduction to Shooting

A shooting sport is a competitive sport involving tests of proficiency (accuracy and speed) using various types of guns such as firearms and air guns. Hunting is also a shooting sport, and indeed shooting live pigeons was an Olympic event. The shooting sports are categorized by the type of firearm or target used.

Rifle: A Rifle is a firearm or air gun with a rifled barrel, but commonly refers to long weapons that usually require two hands to hold and fire steadily. They generally have a longer range and greater accuracy than pistols, and are popular for hunting.

Handguns:  Pistols, are smaller than rifles, and are much more convenient to carry in general. They usually have a shorter range and lesser accuracy compared to rifles.

Shotgun: A Shotgun is similar to a rifle, but typically fires projectiles that either contains many smaller sub-projectiles, or one large projectile. They are more often than not pump-action or single-shot-and-reload actions.

Sub-machine Gun: A Sub-machine Gun (SMG) is a weapon that has a mix of rifle and handgun properties. They share the smaller cartridge of the pistol, but are fully automatic and generally have longer barrels compared to the latter. Sub-machine Gun competitions have been around for over 20 years and are growing in popularity every year.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) of the United Kingdom was founded in 1860 to raise the funds for an annual national rifle meeting "for the encouragement of Volunteer Rifle Corps, and the promotion of Rifle-shooting throughout Great Britain".
For similar reasons, concerned over poor marksmanship during the American Civil War, veteran Union officers Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate formed the National Rifle Association of America in 1871 for the purpose of promoting and encouraging rifle shooting on a "scientific" basis. In 1872, with financial help from New York state, a site on Long Island, the Creed Farm, was purchased for the purpose of building a rifle range. Named Creedmoor, the range opened in 1872, and became the site of the first National Matches until New York politics forced the NRA to move the matches to Sea Girt, New Jersey. The popularity of the National Matches soon forced the event to be moved to its present, much larger location: Camp. In 1903, the U.S. Congress created the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice (NBPRP), an advisory board to the Secretary of the Army, with a nearly identical charter to the NRA. The NBPRP (now known as the Civilian Marksmanship Program) also participates in the National Matches at Camp Perry.
French pistol champion and founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin, participated in many of these early competitions. This fact certainly contributed to the inclusion of five shooting events in the 1896 Olympics. Over the years, the events have been changed a number of times in order to keep up with technology and social standards. For example, targets that formerly resembled humans or animals in their shape and size have are now a circular shape in order to avoid associating the sport with any form of violence. At the same time, some events have been dropped and new ones have been added. The 2004 Olympics featured three shooting disciplines (rifle, pistol and shotgun) where athletes competed for 51 medals in 10 men's and 7 women's events slightly fewer than the previous Olympic schedule.
The Olympic Games continue to provide the shooting sports with its greatest public relations opportunity. The sport has always enjoyed the distinction of awarding the first medals of the Games. Internationally, the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) has oversight of all Olympic shooting events worldwide, while National Governing Bodies (NGBs) administer the sport within each country.
